Does God Forgive Sins You Continue to Repeat? by Tim Keller

Eternal Security by Tony Evans

When you understand everything that Jesus accomplished at the cross, it changes a lot. However, to understand that event, you first need to understand what happened to humanity in the garden of Eden.

In Eden, one unrighteous act of one man ensured every human being was born a slave to sin—we were all guilty because of Adam, and we all carry his rebellious nature inside of us because of him. Because we’re related to Adam—his one act ensured that we are all infected with sin—we are all sick—dying—just as God said we would.

Think about the difficult situation of a little baby who has a disease or a disability that the baby got from their mom or a dad who lived an irresponsible life. It’s so tragic. It isn’t the baby’s fault. It is because of who the baby is related to. It’s not fair that this baby has to suffer. That baby did nothing to deserve it. It’s not fair. It’s tragic. But that is our reality. Life is not fair. Adam gave up fairness in the garden. The impact of his sin is as follows, and the solutions for each are numbered in the article below too.

The wicked are estranged from the womb; These who speak lies go astray from birth. ~Psalm 58:2

This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one fate for all men. Furthermore, the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil and insanity is in their hearts throughout their lives. Afterwards they go to the dead. ~ Ecclesiastes 9:3

The LORD said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done. ~ Genesis 8:21

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. ~ Psalm 51:5

“Dead in sins” – Ephesians 2:1

“Every man is condemned on three accounts: He has a sinful nature, he is under the condemnation of Adam’s sin, and he is under condemnation for his personal sins. Man bears the penalty of the crimes of humanity and of himself. He is hopeless before true justice. No good deed can fix the situation he finds himself in.”[i]

Who has not heard God’s speech?

  • o Creation speaks
  • o Our heritage speaks (man began in relationship to God)
  • o Our conscience speaks
  • o The prophets spoke
  • o Jesus has come

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. ~ Hebrews 1:1-2

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness, because what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give him thanks, but they became futile in their thoughts and their senseless hearts were darkened…Although they fully know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but also approve of those who practice them. ~ Romans 1:18-21, 32

For whenever the Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature the things required by the law, these who do not have the law are a law to themselves. They show that the work of the law is written in their hearts, as their conscience bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or else defend them. ~ Romans 2:14-15

Problems:

1. We are rebels—and we face the penalty of rebellion/treason against the king: death.

2. We are born into a world full of rebels where we suffer because of all the rebellious acts of humanity: murder, war, poverty, bullying, sexual abuse, etc.

3. We are born with a tendency to rebel called the sin nature or flesh.

4. We are born into a world that no longer works perfectly because our sin has cursed nature itself: genetics deteriorate, diseases attack our bodies, animals harm us, and nature cannot operate perfectly or produce food efficiently.

5. Humanity who was once in intimate relationship with God are separated from Him by our sinful actions.

Solutions:

1. Justification & Redemption. Just as one unrighteous act ensures you must pay the penalty for sin, so the single righteous act of one man frees you from that penalty and gives you a clean record.

2. Final Judgment: Just as one unrighteous act of one man set the world on a path where sin would run rampant, so the single righteous act of one man sets the stage for a final judgment where every human being will be called to account and pay the penalty for their actions in a place called hell, unless they have accepted God’s free gift and justification in Jesus. Fittingly, Jesus will be the judge—the one who justifies humanity will condemn those who didn’t accept his free gift and actions.

3. Sanctification: Just as one unrighteous act of one man ensured you were born a slave to sin, so the single righteous act of one man gives you freedom to beat the power of sin (the sinful nature, flesh) in your life.

4. Glorification: Just as one unrighteous act of one man subjected all of creation to the deterioration of sin, so the single righteous act of one man sets the stage for God to restore all of creation to a perfect, non-deteriorating state called Heaven. This change includes God giving us new, perfect bodies too!

5. Reconciliation & Adoption: Just as one unrighteous act of one man destroyed our relationship with God, so the single righteous act of one man opens the door for us to regain that relationship…and not simply a friendship, a family relationship. In Christ we have become the sons and daughters of God. We are a part of God’s family.

Problem #1: We are born rebels—and we face the penalty of rebellion/treason against the king: death.

Solution: Justification. Just as one unrighteous act ensures you must pay the penalty for sin, so the single righteous act of one man frees you from that penalty and gives you a clean record.

A man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. ~ Galatians 2:16

For the history of the world, people’s conscience has told them that they were guilty when they did wrong, and their experience in this world has shown them that all is not as it should be. Unfortunately, instead of meeting God on his own terms, we have chosen instead to appease our conscience by covering our guilt with good acts, which leads us to the conclusion that God must be judging us as we judge ourselves: approving us if we have more good than bad on our scale. The Jews knew better than anyone that this was not true, but many of them used God’s law, a clarification of God’s standards, as another standard by which to try to put more good in their account.

Jesus is the trump card to the philosophy that we earn our salvation. He confirms what God has been communicating all along: Rebels cannot cure their rebellion with good acts. There are no balancing scales for entrance into heaven. We sit in a court room, condemned for treason against the king of the universe. No amount of good behavior gets anyone out of a guilty sentence. Someone has to serve the sentence. Jesus came to be that someone. He lived a life of perfect loyalty to the king of the universe. His record is clean, and He offers to trade us: his innocent life for our guilty sentence. He’s already taken our place…the question is: did you take His?

Complications: The modern Catholic Perspective. Around the middle ages, the catholic church wanted more control over people, so they made the idea of justification fuzzy. They started saying that you could do things that made you “more justified” and they invented the term, purgatory, a place where people who are believers but are not “completely justified” go to suffer and pay for their remaining sins. They talked about being justified for past sins, but not for sins in the present for future. However, nothing in the Bible or in the term justification ever suggests that it’s anything more than an all or nothing: past, present, and future. You can’t be “partially guilty” or “partially innocent” when Jesus paid the full guilty price and gave you His full innocent record.

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Tell me this one thing: How did you receive the Holy Spirit? Did you receive the Spirit by following the law? No, you received the Spirit because you heard the Good News and believed it. 3You began your life in Christ by the Spirit. Now are you trying to make it complete by your own power? That is foolish. 4Were all your experiences wasted? I hope not! 5Does God give you the Spirit and work miracles among you because you follow the law? No, he does these things because you heard the Good News and believed it. 6The Scriptures say the same thing about Abraham: “Abraham believed God, and God accepted Abraham’s faith, and that faith made him right with God.” ~ Galatians 3:2-6

God doesn’t put you through two trials: present and end of life. You cannot contribute anything to your standing with God or your entrance into heaven. Innocent or Guilty, Accepted Jesus Gift or Rejected It. Those are the only options. There’s no middle ground…and that should bring your comfort. You don’t obey God to get to heaven…you obey Him because you have a relationship with Him, you are grateful, you see as He sees, etc…more on that later. Salvation is a gift, not an award. Gifts are not earned, not even partially.

The reason the Protestant denominations exist and remain separate from the modern Catholic church centers around this specific issue more than any other. It was this issue that caused Martin Luther to repeatedly argue against the Catholic church and eventually lend strength to the movement that created the churches we now consider mainstream in America.

Additional Solution: Expiation/Propitiation. God hates rebellion, sin, etc. Expiation is the term used to say that God’s anger was extinguished in Jesus. Propitiation is the gift given to turn away anger.

Why was God angry? Why was he offended? Because of our sin. And see, here is where my illustration of me coming before the judge after playing my trumpet breaks down. You see, no one paid for my speeding ticket. I was Justified. But someone should have paid. Why? Because the law was broken. Let me give another illustration.

Let’s say someone broke the law—someone killed your best friend or raped your sister. That person is caught, is convicted, and the Judge says, “I’m letting you off the hook.” Now, how do you feel about that? Has justice prevailed? No. The Judge has no care towards the law. Evil has won. Nothing has been avenged. Why? Because no one has been punished for the wrong.

You see, the beauty of the gospel is that Jesus pays the penalty for us, justice was satisfied AND God’s anger was appeased because the price was paid.

Additional Solution: Redemption. Redemption = The buying back of a lost possession. God placed the earth under our care and authority. When we rebelled, we handed the authority to Satan. Jesus’ perfect life and his death redeemed humanity from Satan’s control and authority. Satan has lost His authority over those who are in Christ. Jesus has won the right to be king of this world again.

(Think about it: This makes Jesus temptation in the wilderness so much more powerful when Satan offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world…at that time, Satan had the right to do that to some extent.)

The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. ~ Matthew 20:28

You were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. ~ 1 Peter 1:18-19

You have been bought with a price… ~ 1 Corinthians 6:20

Problem #2: We are born into a world full of rebels where we suffer because of all the rebellious acts of humanity: murder, war, poverty, bullying, sexual abuse, etc.

Solution: Final Judgment. Just as one unrighteous act of one man set the world on a path where sin would run rampant, so the single righteous act of one man sets the stage for a final judgment where every human being will be called to account and pay the penalty for their actions in a place called hell, unless they have accepted God’s free gift and justification in Jesus. Fittingly, Jesus will be the judge—the one who justifies humanity will condemn those who didn’t accept his free gift and actions.

Like a prophet, Jesus earthly life and ministry served as a warning to the world of the coming judgment. That judgment has been announced, and His return will be to begin the events he announced before.

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world...

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels… 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

“And I saw a great white throne, and Him sitting on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And a place was not found for them. And I saw the dead, the small and the great, stand before God. And books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead in it. And death and hell delivered up the dead in them. And each one of them was judged according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death. And if anyone was not found having been written in the Book of Life, he was cast into the Lake of Fire” (Revelation 20:11-15).

30 “Therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because He has set a day when He is going to judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.”  (Acts 17:30-31, HCSB)

Problem #3: We are born with a tendency to rebel called the sin nature or flesh.

Solution: Sanctification. Just as one unrighteous act of one man ensured you were born a slave to sin, so the single righteous act of one man gives you freedom to beat the power of sin (the sinful nature, flesh) in your life.

1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins 2 in which you previously walked according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler who exercises authority over the lower heavens, the spirit now working in the disobedient. 3 We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us, 5 made us alive with the Messiah even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!  (Eph 2:1-5, HCSB)

The process of transforming your life over time is called sanctification. When you chose to follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit entered your life, breaking the power of sin to control you and giving you an enhanced conscience: His constant voice. But you’re life from here forward will involve a struggle to understand God, to follow His direction for your life, and to show love in the midst of a world that is still broken. God’s desire is for you to grow more like Him in the midst of the pressure cooker: the pressure of a dark world.

Entering a relationship with God changed your trajectory, your status, and your life…but it has not eradicated the sin nature inside of you…God will remove that at the end of your life, or the end of this world, whichever comes first. For now, there will always be two natures struggling inside of you. Determine to feed the good one—and starve the bad one. Many of the fights you have are due to the way you’ve wired your mind and body to seek and enjoy sinful actions in the past…you can rewire at lot of that over time. The struggle will get easier if you do that over time…but it will be with you for the rest of this life. That’s how God gives us the desire we wanted in the garden of Eden: the knowledge of good AND EVIL. #thestruggleisreal

Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. ~ Romans 6:16-18

14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am made out of flesh, sold into sin’s power. 15 For I do not understand what I am doing, because I do not practice what I want to do, but I do what I hate. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 So now I am no longer the one doing it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it. 19 For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but it is the sin that lives in me. 21 So I discover this principle: When I want to do what is good, evil is with me. 22 For in my inner self I joyfully agree with God’s law. 23 But I see a different law in the parts of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this dying body? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh, to the law of sin.  (Rom 7:14-25, HCSB)

9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 Now if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you. 12 So then, brothers, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.  (Rom 8:9-13, HCSB)

Problem #4: We are born into a world that no longer works perfectly because our sin has cursed nature itself: genetics deteriorate, diseases attack our bodies, animals harm us, and nature cannot operate perfectly or produce food efficiently.

Solution: Glorification. Just as one unrighteous act of one man subjected all of creation to the deterioration of sin, so the single righteous act of one man sets the stage for God to restore all of creation to a perfect, non-deteriorating state called Heaven. This change includes God giving us new, perfect bodies too!

Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. ~ 1 Corinthians 15:51-54

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. ~ Romans 8:20-23

Problem #5: Humanity, who was once in intimate relationship with God are separated from Him by sinful actions.

Solution: Reconciliation and Adoption. Reconciliation is the restoration of the relationship between God and mankind back to the state it had in the garden of Eden. Adoption takes this understanding one step further as we begin to understand that we are not only friends of God, but a part of His family in Christ.

The fundamental change of status from enemy to family makes a HUGE difference in the way we relate to God. Not only has our sin been removed, we have been adopted. God has permanently moved us into His family, which means that we are not subject to losing our relationship with Him through poor decisions and actions.

Through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach. ~ Colossians 1:20-22

For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ. ~ Romans 8:14-17

4 When the time came to completion, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father! ” 7 So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. (Gal 4:4-7, HCSB)

But to all who have received him—those who believe in his name—he has given the right to become God’s children. –John 1:12

See also: Romans 8:23, 9:4, Ephesians 1:5

Adoption means that God disciplines you…He doesn’t punish you. God does not punish His children, He disciplines them. Kings and judges punish outsiders, they discipline insiders.

Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world. ~ 1 Corinthians 11:27-32

You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,

“MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD,
NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM;
FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES,
AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES.”

It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. Therefore, strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, and make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed. ~ Hebrews 12:5-13

Key Questions that this week’s content should help you answer:

· What does it take to accept Jesus?
It takes an understanding that Jesus wants to restore your relationship with God, that He died for you. That’s all. That knowledge may grow…but it doesn’t not have to extensive to make a saving choice. Salvation is a gift…not an award. You do nothing to earn it. You simply accept it.

A person can be VERY confused about whether or not Jesus is the only way. He or she can hold beliefs that are Catholic, Mormon, Hindu or even Muslim—but if you stake your claim on heaven based on the life and death of Jesus Christ, God will honor that understand above a person’s ignorance and

· How can I know that I am saved?
You should look at the day you started a relationship with Jesus…did you sincerely ask God to save you? Do you feel as if the Holy Spirit got to work in your life?

· Why do I still struggle to sin?

· Can I lose my salvation?
Those who most often struggle with assurance of salvation do so because of:

  1. Anger for something that happened that they can’t trust God with.
  2. A misunderstanding of salvation and that the fact that their sins past, present, and future have been wiped away.
  3. Confusion over the fact that they are not just forgiven, but they have become part of God’s family, and that nothing they can do will cause Him to kick them out.
  4. The sin nature: the fact that part of them still struggles and fails to live correctly. They thought that salvation meant that they would no longer struggle.

Salvation is a gift…not an award. Nothing you can do can cause you to lose your salvation…you did nothing to earn it, so you can do nothing to lose it. Jesus extended His free gift knowing that it would be abused…by everyone who accepted it. We are not capable of perfection in this life. He also knew you’d be angry with Him at times…that’s why there’s so many people in relationship with Him who’s angry words are recorded in the Bible.

35 Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or anguish or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: Because of You we are being put to death all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. 37 No, in all these things we are more than victorious through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, 39 height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!  (Rom 8:35-39, HCSB)

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; no one will snatch them from my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can snatch them from my Father’s hand.  (John 10:28-29, NET)

Look back at the time you started your relationship with God…were you sincere in asking God to save you? Did you feel the Holy Spirit get to work in your life? Either confess those sins and give up the things that make you feel far from God at present so that you can get back to an intimate relationship with God, or make that sincere plea for the first time.

And remember this: We always feel lost when we have disconnected our relationship with God by selfish actions and attitudes. That feeling is distance…not a lost relationship. Once you’ve become God’s son or daughter, you can’t cease to be family…you can only be rebellious family. The best way to get rid of the fear and disconnected feelings—to feel assured that you are saved, is to get close to God. Go to the extreme obeying Him and serving others—I promise you that you’ll cease to struggle with those feelings.
