Big Idea: Leadership is a Process – becoming a good leader requires the regular investment of learning and practice.
Key Points to Mention:
Personalities, life experiences, and things learned all contribute to making a person a leader.
But to be a GREAT leader, you must commit to growing yourself through habits. Habits that form you on a weekly and even daily basis: growing knowledge, developing character, and practicing abilities.
There are people who have great abilities…but most of them have worked daily to get them. Only a VERY few are lucky enough to have naturally great abilities, and usually they fail because their ability is not connected to a solid level of knowledge or character.
Why? Because great leaders know that great leadership must be prepared for the moment it’s needed…and you can’t become the person you need to be in the moment. It’s the principle of the Pop Quiz—life will give you the pop quiz, and if your character, knowledge or abilities will be revealed, not developed. Quizzes don’t teach, they simply give you the opportunity to reveal who you are.
John Maxwell on the Law of the Process:
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days. Daniel 6:10
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. – Romans 12:2
Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. – 1 Timothy 4:14-15
Moses was raised in Pharaoh’s household for 40 years. No wonder he was a capable leader of the Israelites through the desert to the Promised Land.
David killed bears and lions before he killed Goliath…that is where his confidence came from. He also became a competent king by watching Saul rule as his musician.
Bill Gates spent over 10,000 hours working on programming languages before introducing Microsoft Windows to the world. He wasn’t so much a smart guy, as he was a smart guy who honed his techy skills long before anyone else did.
Expert musicians spent 4-8 hours a day playing their instrument, EVERY DAY. They are good because they practice!
Athletes train. Olympic atheletes train at least 25 hours a week. Professional Athletes train 8-12 hours a day. They are professional for a reason…its their job to perform at the game.
Soldiers train. They keep in shape and run realistic wartime scenarios to ensure that they don’t just know what to do, but that they will do it. The right behaviors become a reflex.
Good Discussion Questions:
- What were your parents or friends good at? How often did they practice?
- What things are you better than others at? Did you practice more than those you beat or did you win due to natural ability? How much more practice did you have?
Practice does not have to be a solo activity. If you are a social person, or need the motivation of meeting someone else, then establish a partnership with another leader. Have a reading time, a workout partnership, or a set lunch where you are challenged in your growth by another person. You can utilize professors, pastors, friends, and subject-matter-experts. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to share their knowledge…it usually really honors them!
